Signs That You Need A Transmission Replacement Or Repair
All vehicles will at some point in their life have transmission problems. These problems could result in transmission replacement or repair needing to be completed. It is important that you know what the signs of these problems are so you can take the steps necessary to have it fixed.
Problems When Shifting Gears
The gears in your car an integral part of the transmission system and any problems with them could be a sign of transmission issues. The gear problems that you need to take note of include the car hesitating when changing gear, falling out of gear while driving, a shifting of the gears for no reason and the car jerking when the gears are shifted. There are a number of problems that could cause this to happen and not all of them will result in your car needing a transmission replacement.
Grinding When Gears Are Shifted
If you hear a grinding noise when you change gears in a manual transmission car or your feel shaking when changing gears in an automatic it could be a sign of a worn clutch. This could result in the clutch needing to be replaced. It is important that you not allow this problem to persist because it could shut down your transmission and this will cause larger problems.
Hearing Unusual Noises
If your vehicle starts to make noises that are unusual such as a whining this is often a sign of transmission problems. If your car is also very noisy when in neutral it could be a sign of transmission problems. It is important to note that there are other problems outside the transmission system that could be causing these noises, but it is recommended that you have this looked into before it becomes a major problem.
Cloudy Or Burnt Transmission Fluid
The transmission fluid in your car will be a bright red color and it comes with a sweet smell. If the fluid is dark or opaque and has a burnt look or smell it means trouble with the system. This could be happening because the transmission system is overheating or there is a contaminant in the fluid. Regardless of the reasoning, it is important that the transmission system is looked at as soon as possible before the bad liquid will be causing additional problems.
If you are able to smell a burnt odor from the transmission fluid, but you have not checked it this could be your gears overheating. Gears will overheat when there is too much friction. A burnt smell from the transmission will often result in the transmission being replaced because it is going bad.
Leaking Transmission Fluid
If you see red fluid where you park your car you need to take your car to a mechanic. A leak does not always mean that your need to replace your transmission, but the leak will need to be stopped before other problems occur. If you allow the leak to continue your gears may start to grind and other problems could also begin to show.
